Rajarshi Ganguly, The Bengal News, West Bengal, 22nd January 2026 : The air in West Bengal is thick with the scent of incense and the vibrant sight of Basanti (yellow) as the state gears up for Saraswati Puja tomorrow, January 23. From the historic lanes of Kumartuli to the bustling neighborhood markets of Gariahat and Siliguri, the “pre-puja” vibe has reached a fever pitch today.

In North Kolkata’s famous potters’ colony, Kumartuli, the rhythmic sound of the Dhak (traditional drum) has already begun to echo. Artisans were seen putting the final touches of gold paint on the Goddess’s Veena this morning. Despite a slight 10-15% rise in idol prices compared to last year due to higher raw material costs, demand remains soaring. Small household idols are retailing between ₹500 and ₹2,500, while larger, intricately themed idols for schools and clubs have crossed the ₹15,000 mark.

Fashion retailers across the state have reported a massive surge in sales over the last 48 hours.

  • Basanti Sarees: The traditional yellow cotton and silk sarees remain the top choice for students.
  • Panjabis: Young men have crowded shops for yellow and white Panjabis (kurtas).
  • Street Style: Even local accessory stalls are seeing a “yellow-out,” with marigold-colored bangles and hair clips flying off the shelves.

Often dubbed the “Bengali Valentine’s Day,” the youth-centric nature of the festival is evident in the cafe and restaurant bookings across Kolkata and Salt Lake. Many eateries have introduced special “Saraswati Puja Bhog Thalis” featuring Khichuri, Labra (mixed veg), and Beguni (eggplant fritters) to cater to the thousands of students expected to be out “pandal hopping” in their festive finery tomorrow.

Quick Guide for Tomorrow (Jan 23, 2026):

  • Pushpanjali Timing: Most pandals will conduct the floral offering between 7:30 AM and 11:00 AM.
  • Hate Khori: This auspicious ceremony for toddlers starting their education is scheduled for the early morning hours.
  • Weather Update: A pleasant, slightly nippy morning is expected, with temperatures around 18°C, perfect for outdoor celebrations.
