Barun Kr. Das, The Bengal News, Kolkata, India : The spirit of spring came alive in vibrant hues and rhythmic beats as rehearsals for Diksha Manjari’s Basanta Utsav 2026 unfolded in full swing. From the energetic strains of “Jai Ho” to the timeless melody of “Ore Grihobashi,” the upcoming celebration promises an evening of music, dance, and colour at its finest.

Over the past several years, Diksha Manjari’s Basanta Utsav has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated cultural events welcoming the season of spring. This year is no exception. More than 500 students will take the stage, presenting a grand dance spectacle that blends Bengal’s Dol traditions with the festive fervour of Holi celebrated across India. The courtyard of the Indian Museum is set to be transformed into a canvas of music, movement, and vibrant abir.
The event is being jointly organised by the Indian Museum, Diksha Manjari, Dakshinayan UK, and the Prabha Khaitan Foundation. The celebration will be held on March 1, 2026, from 6:00 PM onwards at the Indian Museum premises, in the presence of several distinguished guests.
Renowned Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly is spearheading the choreography and overall conceptualisation of the programme. She, along with her troupe “Diksha Manjari,” will lead the dance presentations. The evening will feature classical compositions, popular Bengali and Hindi songs, and special renditions of Rabindranath Tagore’s spring songs performed by artists of Dakshinayan UK, under the direction of Ananda Gupta.
For nearly two decades, the Basanta Utsav was traditionally hosted at the artist’s residence ahead of Dol. In recent years, however, the celebration has found a larger home within the heritage space of the Indian Museum, allowing it to grow both in scale and participation.
Speaking about the journey, Dona Ganguly shared, “Over the years, the number of students has increased significantly, and it became difficult to host the event at home. It feels wonderful to see so many talented individuals come together. What began as a home celebration has gradually evolved into a grand gathering here. The blend of dance, music, and the playful application of abir creates a unique joy. Many school students visit the museum, and we also organise workshops beforehand. Everyone participates with great enthusiasm.”
Ananda Gupta added, “Although our organisation has collaborated with Diksha Manjari on several productions earlier, this is our first time being part of the Basanta Utsav. It is truly a pleasure to witness such a massive congregation of dancers and to be associated with Dona Ganguly’s inspiring initiative.”
With its rich blend of tradition, artistry, and youthful energy, Diksha Manjari’s Basanta Utsav 2026 promises to be a memorable herald of spring in the heart of Kolkata.
