Santanu Bose, The Bengal News, Barsana, India : The narrow, winding lanes of Barsana, the legendary home of Radha, were transformed into a sea of crimson and indigo this week as the world-famous Lathmar Holi reached its peak. Thousands of devotees, photographers, and curious travelers descended upon this small town in Uttar Pradesh to witness a ritual that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

The celebration, which took place on Wednesday, February 25, centers on a playful “battle” between the men of Nandgaon (Lord Krishna’s village) and the women of Barsana. Following the ancient lore of the Dwapar Yug, where a young Krishna and his friends were chased away by Radha and her gopis for their mischievous teasing, the modern-day “Hurriyeres” (men) arrived in Barsana armed only with shields. As the sun reached its zenith, the women of Barsana, draped in vibrant traditional finery, met the men with sturdy bamboo sticks known as lathis. To the rhythmic beat of dhols and chants of “Radhe Radhe,” the women rained down playful strikes upon the men’s leather shields.

“It isn’t about force; it’s about devotion,” said a local priest from the Radha Rani Temple. “Each strike is a reminder of the divine play (Leela) between the Lord and his beloved. Today, the entire Braj region is immersed in this spirit of love.”

While the dust (and gulal) settles in Barsana, the celebration is far from over. The “battle” shifted to Nandgaon on Thursday, where the roles were reversed. The Braj Holi calendar continues with:

  • Phoolon Ki Holi (Flower Holi) in Vrindavan (Today, March 1)
  • Widow’s Holi at Gopinath Temple (March 2)
  • Holika Dahan (March 3)
  • Dhulandi (Main Color Holi) (March 4)

For those standing in the pink-stained streets of Barsana today, the message was clear: in the land of Radha-Krishna, every strike of a stick and every handful of color is a celebration of an eternal bond.
